今日から後半戦だ。順調にお金を使っている。連日の深酒。昨日はグラスワインを6杯程だったんだがなぁ。目が赤く充血している。また楽しくジャズを聞き、鼻歌交じりで日付が変わってから帰ってきた。ダイナーが看板になった午前1時に店を出された。ダイナーって朝のイメージがあるけれど深夜までやっているんだな。酒も置いてある。真夜中にリボン型のパスタを食べた。晩飯も取らずに飲んでばかりいたから。
ジャズはBonafideと言う店で聞いていたが、観光客皆無。気分はここの住民になった感じ。若い女性のサックス奏者はフランス人だったが、少し心もとなかった。きっと音楽学校の学生だろう。最後にはかなり熱演した。ミランダ・カーみたいな丸顔、色白でジャズプレイヤーには見えない感じだった。「ウエイン・ショーターみたいだったよ」と声をかけたらすごく喜んでいた。
こっちの人間は握手をしたりハグしたり大変だ。日本で握手したのはいつのことだったろう。ハグは当然したことがない。男同士でハグするって変でしょう。
タクシーは相変わらずバングラデシュの運転手だったが道々色んな話をした。アメリカに来て26年のオジさんは私より若いのに苦労しているなぁと思った。娘がコロンビア大学に入ったことが自慢そうだった。そして私が日本人であることを言い当てて自慢げだった。中国や韓国の人間とは違いがあると言っていた。そして尊敬していると。チップ稼ぎか？
ちょっとマンハッタンを乗り回したら、20ドルくらいは簡単にかかることも理解した。

Today, I went to the beach front with my children.
